Cyberspace

The world is getting smaller, there is no doubt about that. But what is perhaps surprising is the way in which this is happening. For the way in which the world is getting smaller is by the creation of a new one – the world wide web. These days we are all connected through technology – the electronic communications networks which binds us all. Cyberspace, as it is known, is a global domain which we all share.

When people think of cyberspace they imagine finding a computer and logging on to the internet. This image is still relevant, but a new form of web access is taking hold in the form mobile broadband, effectively meaning that you can take the internet with you. All you need is a portable modem and a USB and you can pick up the internet wherever you like – meaning that a further technological advancement has shrunk the world even more. Mobile Broadband involves high speed internet access via wireless, portable modems and telephones.

There are a whole world of advantages that come with mobile broadband and cyberspace. Of course it means that involving yourself with the cyber world is now a whole lot easier. It is now highly convenient to get online with the ability to log on from any location. There is no longer any need for a land line, making it portable, meaning you can now hold cyberspace in your hands. Finally, there are so many ways you can use it that there is an added flexibility that can only advance and improve cyberspace

The term cyberspace comes from the world of cybernetics and can be traced back to the likes of Norbert Weiner and his work in electronic communication, however it was William Gibson who coined the term in the genre of cyber punk in science fiction. It has developed since its initial inception to take into account anything computer related including the wide internet culture associated with social networking sites like myspace.com, facebook.com and bebo. Email and instant messaging also gets included in this definition along with the virtual worlds of Second Life. People no longer need to watch television to get their news, they can simply get online from anywhere in the world and read blogs, news sites and message boards, discovering news from various countries and cultures which were never previously available.

Gone are the days where people had to venture into the large public spaces separate from the rest of the world to get their point across. Today, the world thrives on the virtual public space. The world is getting smaller, but the possibilities are getting bigger.
